Born of a university exercise in brand identities, FRIENDTIME! grew to be much more than a clothing label. Woven into the fibres of each of the screen-printed t-shirts was an inherently positive message.
As the project progressed, I secured a pop-up stall in a monthly creative marketplace. After experimenting with the delivery of the concept to the general public, FRIENDTIME! morphed—rather organically—into somewhat of a social experiment. On a monthly basis, I was given an avenue to reach out to hundreds of people and present a message. Aside from selling the shirts in a pay what you want method, we engaged passersby with quotes I’d written together with my friend Pedrom Pourbozorgi. These offerings were presented large and wonderful, covering a variety of topics, and were met with a wide array of reactions. Some were impressed, some enthused, some touched, some shocked, and some seemingly appalled at the power we had given them. Whilst this wasn’t a great exercise in business, though not unsuccessful, it was an incredible exploration of public interaction, and there were many positively influenced by the sentiments of our work.
We are the luckiest few in the world, we have a roof over our heads, friends that love us, food in our stomachs and clothes on our backs. What we adorn our bodies with reflects who we are and what we stand for, there are no strings attached and nothing beyond the present. Are we truly naive enough to surrender this luxury by lending our backs, free of reward to someone else’s ulterior motive? In a world enslaved by brands, monetary gain and ultimately negativity, these shirts are a small offering to spread love, if only for a brief moment.
What a peculiar existence we live. Our minds are far more brilliant, beautiful and boundless than we could possibly imagine, and yet we fall into the illusion of the self. We find our passions, our friends, our comforts, and ourselves, but somewhere along the way, we forget that we are all small, unimaginably significant members of this inconceivable journey.
We blindly adorn our bodies as billboards of greed and negativity, without reflection as to how that defines who we are, and how we shape the universe. Cast aside the brands, the deep pockets and the shameless excess. Accept the good, but above all else, participate in it. Spread love. Have a beautiful life.
You are wonderful. Manifested within you are all the tools necessary to both attain, and provide immeasurable happiness. Armed with the power of choice, we make decisions affecting how we view our world, and in turn, participate in it. The perspective by which we guide our individual journey impacts upon everything around us far greater than we consciously realise. Be the good you want to receive. Spread love on this brief excursion, fellow traveller.
Here we are. Traversing an extraordinarily diverse array of lives and stories, we are presented with the reality that survival is no longer what we wake to secure. Instead, we awaken to a world that is unquestionably at our fingertips. But to this, we interrogate our hands, doubting their impact and the lives they may touch. Cast this hesitation aside, for you are privileged with boundless opportunities, the likes of which should not be squandered. Spread love and be the influence you wish to accept, fellow traveller.
Life is vulnerable, short, beautiful.
While time will inevitably deliver our bodies to dust, this world will be succeeded by the ripples of our choices. As such, the responsibility is placed within us to cast every action with conscious thought.
Act for change. Explore and inspire the best in others, and most importantly, yourself. Spread love on this transient journey, dear friend.
